Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Glass can break when it moves too quickly between very different temperatures. Do not place a cold dish directly into a hot oven, and do not move a hot dish onto a cold or wet surface.

If you are baking a refrigerated casserole or another cold dish, place it in a cold oven first, then turn the oven on. This allows the glass and the oven to heat gradually together.

Simple Safety Tips

• Avoid moving a dish directly from the freezer or refrigerator into a preheated oven.

• Do not add cold liquid to a hot Pyrex dish.

• Allow hot dishes to cool gradually before refrigerating, washing, or placing them on a cold countertop.

• Check the dish before use. Chipped or cracked glass is more likely to break.

• Use only in a preheated oven, microwave, freezer, or dishwasher as directed for your specific Pyrex piece.

• Do not use Pyrex on a stovetop, under a broiler, or over an open flame.

• For oven temperatures, follow the instructions that came with your specific dish. A maximum temperature of 425°F is commonly recommended for glass bakeware.

Older U.S. pieces marked PYREX in capital letters are commonly associated with borosilicate glass. Many newer U.S. pieces marked Pyrexin lowercase letters use soda-lime glass.

Both types are widely used and considered safe when handled according to their care instructions. The most important thing is to avoid sudden temperature changes, inspect the dish before use, and allow hot glass to cool gradually.
